Pieropan - Soave Classico "Calvarino" 2023 (750ml)
Pieropan Description
The list of ‘firsts’ that Pieropan can lay claim to is almost unbelievable: the first to label a wine “Soave,” the first to age a Soave wine before release, the first to make a single vineyard Soave (1971 Calvarino), the first to make an Italian native-grape white wine from a single vineyard (also 1971 Calvarino), the first to make a barrel-aged Soave (1978 La Rocca), the first to bottle under screwcap in the region, the first to convert to organic farming in Soave...
All of this pioneering centers primarily around Leonildo (“Nino”) Pieropan, the third generation winemaker and mastermind behind the first vintages of Calvarino and La Rocca. With just those two wines, he helped lift the reputation of the Soave region as a whole.
Wine Advocate: 94 Points
This is always one of my favorite wines from Pieropan. Fruit comes from an 8.5-hectare cru planted in 1971 on valcanic soils, and the wine is aged in cement vats for a prolonged 15 months. The organic 2023 Soave Classico Calvarino (made with 70% Garganega and 30% Trebbiano di Soave) is a real beauty, with textural heft and an especially silky approach that wraps smoothly over the palate. The bouquet is beautifully complex with hints of honey, apricot and poached apple. I love the intensity and the seamless qualiyu of this mid-weight white. Salty mineral nuances fuel an elegant mouthfeel.
