Pieropan - Soave Classico "Calvarino" 2022 (750ml)
Pieropan Description
The list of ‘firsts’ that Pieropan can lay claim to is almost unbelievable: the first to label a wine “Soave,” the first to age a Soave wine before release, the first to make a single vineyard Soave (1971 Calvarino), the first to make an Italian native-grape white wine from a single vineyard (also 1971 Calvarino), the first to make a barrel-aged Soave (1978 La Rocca), the first to bottle under screwcap in the region, the first to convert to organic farming in Soave...
All of this pioneering centers primarily around Leonildo (“Nino”) Pieropan, the third generation winemaker and mastermind behind the first vintages of Calvarino and La Rocca. With just those two wines, he helped lift the reputation of the Soave region as a whole.
Wine Enthusiast: 96 Points
Crystalline and focused, this vintage of Calvarino magnifies the distinct aromas of Soave's volcanic soil with hints of smoke and flint. As the wine opens, aromas of lemon oil, white peach, jasmine and green apple skin lift from the glass. The wine is 3D in the glass with vertical and horizontal flavors filling the mouth while fresh acidity lifts the palate. Flavors mirror the palate with the addition of a hint of marzipan finishing with an energy that hints towards the ageability of the wine.
James Suckling: 94 Points
This is very good, meshing the inherent ripeness of the vintage with a mineral-infused pungency... Yet the feel is linear, cool and taut, with a growing trajectory of fruit sweetness across the long, energetic finish.
