Peay Vineyards Description
A First Generation Family Winery
Husband and wife, Nick Peay & Vanessa Wong, grow and make the wine and brother Andy Peay sells the wine and runs the business.
With minor exceptions, all wines are made from grapes grown on our 53-acre hilltop vineyard located above a river in the far northwestern corner of the West Sonoma Coast, 4 miles from the Pacific Ocean at Sea Ranch. We grow 34 acres of Pinot noir (4 Pinots: Scallop Shelf, Pomarium, Ama, Sonoma Coast), 8 acres of Syrah (2 Syrah: Les Titans, La Bruma), 7 acres of Chardonnay (2 Chardonnay: Estate, Sonoma Coast), 1.8 acres of Viognier (Estate), 0.4 acres of Roussanne and 0.2 acres of Marsanne (Estate blend). We also make a Pinot noir from the famed Savoy Vineyard in Anderson Valley.
We are certified organic farmers with a respect for Mother Nature’s ability to create an intricately complex and balanced natural environment. We do not till our soils but seek to encourage soil and root health. We maintain our certifications for fish-friendly farming and integrated pest management. We also run on bio-diesel at the vineyard and solar power at both the vineyard and winery. The long-term health of our vineyard dictates these approaches to farming and making wine.
"I did a double-take when I tasted this wine, thinking I had mistakenly grabbed the 2021 Estate Chardonnay. The depth, shape, minerality, and overall polish remind me of the Estate cuvée. This is not surprising as 95% of this wine comes from Estate fruit with the remaining barrel sourced from a few acres we helped plant on a neighbor’s property.
The nose has a combination of baked lemon, coconut meat (not milk), lime oil, and flint aromas. On the silky (but not heavy) mid-palate, biscuit aromas peek in along with wet slate notes. Despite its youth, the oak flavors are well-integrated and hardly noticeable, providing texture without dominating the profile. The finish is energetic and bright with fresh acidity and a long after-taste. This is great Chardonnay and will be for many years to come."
Vinous: 93 Points
The 2021 Chardonnay (West Sonoma Coast) is superb. Bright and effusive, the 2021 is a fabulous introduction to this range. Lemon confit, pastry, white flowers and a kiss of new French oak are nicely pushed forward. This mid-weight, nuanced Chardonnay is pure class.
Wine Advocate: 92 Points
Now utilizing the recently approved West Sonoma Coast appellation (the label used to simply read "Sonoma Coast"), the 2021 Chardonnay West Sonoma Coast has fresh, pure aromas of red apple, bread dough, jasmine and almonds. The light-bodied palate is focused and energetic, with a pleasurable, balancing creaminess to the texture and a long, biscuity finish.
