Michel Gahier Description
The Gahier family has been resident in the Jura since 1525. The family domaine is 6.5 hectares with the vineyards concentrated in the village of Montigny-les-Arsures, the place recognized as the home of Trousseau. Michel Gahier has learned from the best, as neighbor and friend of Jacques Puffeney. His observations and ongoing dialogue with Puffeney have instilled skills and sensibility that produce undeniably outstanding wines that clearly express the very particular terroir of this corner of the Jura.
Produced in truly miniscule quantities, Gahier’s Macvin du Jura channels the same no-brakes, dazzlingly energetic spirit that imbues his wines. Following the traditional blend of two-thirds unfermented grape must and one-third marc, it captures the gleaming health of Michel’s impeccably farmed fruit in a concoction that is mouthwatering in its combination of acidity, salinity, and luscious freshness. While the blend may change depending on the harvest, Michel typically employs both Chardonnay and Trousseau musts in his Macvin’s creation.
Macvin is a dessert style famous in the Jura; the juice and must of Savagnin grapes are boiled, fortified with brandy and aged for a minimum of six years in barrel before bottling.
