Domaine de l'Arlot Description
To fall in love with Burgundy is to resign oneself to a life of equal parts euphoria and edification. It is both an academic and hedonistic endeavor that may last a lifetime. Finding a domaine that produces wines capable of delivering consistent pleasure from their infancy in the barrel, to their 30 year anniversary, can be a difficult search. Yet, there is a little blue house just south of Nuits St. Georges named Domaine de l’Arlot, where one’s search for Burgundy bliss can be found.
A conversation about Domaine de l’Arlot begins and ends with a conversation about the premier cru monopoles that have come to define the estate: Clos des Forêts Saint Georges and Clos de l’Arlot. Tasting in the cellars of this historic producer provides one of the great terroir lessons in Burgundy. Since Clos des Forêts runs along an entire slope in Nuits St. Georges, each section of the slope is vinified separately. The differences between the richer wine of the clay-heavy lower slope and the high toned juiciness of the pure limestone top of the slope could not be any clearer. It is an experience that speaks not only to the wonders of Burgundian terroir, but also of the privileged location that l’Arlot presides over.
The Clos des Forêts Saint Georges covers the entire geological range of the slopes of Nuits Saint Georges: Ladoix limestone at the bottom, Premeaux limestone in the middle, and white oolite limestone in the upper part, with a marked presence of ochre silt in some places. This Clos is planted entirely to Pinot Noir.
Tasting Note: Complex aromas of blackcurrant mingled with spicy blackberry are revealed on the nose with, depending on the vintage, darker notes of liquorice, leather and blood orange. The well-built mouth affirms itself with density and strength around a tight structure with rich, well-wrapped tannins. It becomes increasingly seductive over time, which comes from the elegance, intensity and purity of the fruit.
Vinous: 94-96 Points
The 2022 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos des Forêts Saint Georges ler Cru was also raised in 40% new oak. [Incidentally, 0.6ha will be planted with Chardonnay in 2024]. Slightly deeper in color compared to the Clos de l'Arlot, this has slightly more cohesion and complexity on the nose: dark cherries and crushed stone, a hint of wilted rose petals in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with beautifully integrated new oak, lending this a velvety veneer. It is a little plush yet with equivalent tension and a detailed, slightly piquant finish. This is an outstanding Nuits Saint-Georges from the Domaine.
