Domaine Denis Mortet Description

A supremely talented vigneron, and currently at the helm of Denis Mortet, Arnaud Mortet is routinely praised for his work in the vineyards. Founded by his grandfather, Charles, in 1956, Arnaud took control in 2006 after the death of his legendary father, Denis. He continues his father's legacy of making refined, elegant wines along with his sister, Clemence, and his mother, Laurence.

Arnaud's wines are reaching new levels as the winemaker has been embracing more traditional vinification and viticulture techniques. The majority of the vineyard care is accomplished by hand, including horses plowing all 1er and Grand Cru vineyards to minimize soil compaction. Since 1996, chemical fertilizers and herbicides are avoided in the vineyards, using crop cover of chickweed to help provide health of the vines. Yields are kept very low, and small crates are used during harvest to protect the berries. In the cellar, grapes see gentle macerations, and a reduced percentage of new oak. The grapes are undergo a strict triple sorting upon arriving at the estate and the wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered.

A perfectionist by nature, Arnaud is making superbly finessed and precise wines as he continues to evolve this domaine.

As its name indicates, this wine is made from six hectares of five terroirs: En Motrot (located between the church and Château de Gevrey-Chambertin, immediately after Clos Saint-Jacques and at the end of Lavaux Valley), Au Vellé (situated to the north of Château de Gevrey-Chambertin, this plot of old vines stands on a slope of gradual incline and is fully east-facing), La Combe du Dessus (on a gentle slope; it is at the end of Lavaux Valley, opposite En Motrot), En Champs (located on a gentle slope at the foot of the 1er Cru Les Champeaux and facing the rising sun) and En Dérée (located at the foot of the slope of the place named En Champs, this plot of very old vines). These five vine plots are situated on the northern slope of Gevrey-Chambertin called the “Côteau de Brochon."

Vinous: 91-93 Points

The 2023 Gevrey-Chambertin Mes Cinq Terroirs, from parcels in the north of the appellation, is matured in one- to three-year-old barrels, Mortet regaling the latter as something that enhances the wines by lessening the wood impact. It has a very well-defined bouquet with raspberry and crushed strawberry fruit, the one-third whole bunch imparting light white-peppery scents. The palate is well balanced with a sharp entry-a more angular Gevrey with plenty of spice on the finish. Superb.

Wine Advocate: 90-92 Points

Aromas of orange zest, sweet red berries, cherries and rose petals preface Mortet's 2023 Gevrey-Chambertin Mes Cinq Terroirs, a medium to full-bodied, fleshy and layered wine that's deep but suave, with polished tannins and a long, perfumed finish. This has turned out beautifully.

Burghound: 89-92 Points

A ripe but nicely fresh nose blends notes from both sides of the fruit spectrum while adding softly earth, spice and floral wisps. The sleek bigger-bodied and slightly denser flavors are clearly more powerful if not more mineral-driven on the impressively complex, balanced and lingering finale. This is also a very fine villages and recommended.
