Domaine Larue Description

In 1946, Guy Larue founded his family’s estate in the small hamlet of Gamay, in Saint-Aubin, located just behind the famed Montrachet and Chevalier-Montrachet slope. Much like its neighbor Chassagne-Montrachet to the south, Saint-Aubin was historically known for red wine, though the Larues have specialized in the great white crus of Saint-Aubin. In 1976, Guy’s son Denis assumed the reins of Domaine Larue and was joined by his brother, Didier, in 1982. In 2006, Denis’s son Bruno joined the Domaine, thus continuing the family’s winemaking lineage.

Wines from Larue possess purity, energy, and an invariable minerality derived from the predominant limestone soils of Saint-Aubin. The Larues are meticulous and precise in all aspects of winegrowing and winemaking and their wines reflect these qualities. Tasting the full range is a veritable tour of the appellation, with each terroir’s individual and striking signature clearly evident. These wonderful white Burgundies have the additional benefit of being approachable young, although they are tightly wound and can always benefit from a few extra years of bottle age.

"Murgers des Dents de Chien" is positioned on a south-running spur, the eastern side of which overlooks the Montrachet and Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru vineyards. The 16 hectare (39 acre) vineyard lies at the top of the northern side of the entrance to the Saint-Aubin valley that cuts roughly westwards into the Côte d'Or hillside. Its eastern edge runs along the border with the Puligny-Montrachet commune.

Below Murgers des Dents de Chien, still on the spur, lies En Remilly which borders both Puligny and Chassagne-Montrachet. West of Murgers des Dents de Chien is the Premier Cru lieu-dit Sur Gamay.

Murgers des Dents de Chien means "walls of dogs' teeth", and refers to the many jagged walls that dot the landscape here. These are often used as vineyard boundaries, or as retaining walls for terraces, often formed of stones picked from the vineyards while these are being worked.

Murgers des Dents de Chien has a similar kind of soil to Le Montrachet below, made up of pebbly, broken limestone. This is shallow and very well drained. The lack of water in the soil also means that warmth is readily absorbed during the day, providing help with ripening during the growing season.
