Venica & Venica Description
Venica & Venica is one of Friuli’s most well known and respected estates, a family-owned operation whose ambition and dedication to sustainability run even deeper than their history in the Collio. Renowned for turning out highly textural and aromatic whites, their vineyards are a kaleidoscope of the vast potential of winemaking in this area, upheld by an impeccable adherence to organic practices and respect for the environment. The family’s natural sense of hospitality carries over in everything that they do, adding a special component to the azienda.
Also known as Pinot Gris and coming from Alsace, it spread all over the globe and is today considered an “international” grape. It is the first Italian still white wine in terms of export volumes and Italy is the largest producer in the world in terms of cultivated hectares of vines, located mainly in the Triveneto area in the North-east.
This variety was born from a genetic mutation of the most celebrated Pinot Noir, which led to a change in the color of its grapes. In fact, despite its wide diffusion, few know that Pinot Grigio is a gray berry grape: its bunches have a gray-pink color tending to purplish. And this is why the resulting wine takes wonderful coppery hues if processed with a light maceration on the skins.
The vineyard “Jesera”, from which our Pinot Grigio takes its name, is located inside the DOC Collio.
Vinous: 92 Points
With a pretty coppery hue, the 2024 Pinot Grigio Jesera opens with a refreshing bouquet of wildflowers, stone dust and nuances of gingery spice. It's soft textured with a silken wave of ripe pit fruits underscored by tactile mineral tones and a core of brisk acidity. This finishes long and perfumed, leaving a subtle grippiness as hints of Asian pear slowly fade.
