Scar of the Sea Description

Scar of the Sea was established in 2012 and is owned and operated by Mikey & Gina Giugni in San Luis Obispo, CA. What began as a grassroots journey - leasing small coastal vineyard sites - has grown into a deeper relationship between farming and the land.

In July 2024, Mikey and Gina found their forever farm - the 29-acre Bassi Vineyard in Avila Beach, nestled in the heart of the SLO Coast AVA, one mile from the Pacific Ocean. This coastal site, farmed using regenerative and biodynamic principles, is now their home vineyard. With it, they now steward 42 acres in total with their small, dedicated team. All the wines are made naturally - with native yeast, no adjustments, and bottled unfiltered.

Every wine is a reflection of place, an echo of the coast, and a story they're still learning to tell. They make wines for themselves first - pure, honest, and rooted in the beauty of the California Central Coast. The goal is simple, to tell the story of the land through their wines.

This planting of Syrah is apart of the original plantings on the east side of the property where sandy loam meets sandstone outcroppings. There is 2.8 acres of Syrah planted at Bassi, sitting 1.2 miles from the ocean. Due to the orientation of the Avila Ridge, this geological feature is responsible for keeping Bassi a warm enough site to ripen both Pinot Noir and Syrah this close to the Pacific Ocean.

Tasting Note: Think purple flowers, black olive, cracked black pepper with fresh tannins.

Wine Advocate: 94 Points

Always one of the more distinctive wines in the greater San Luis Obispo Coast, the 2024 Syrah Bassi Vineyard is immediately compelling on the nose, opening with lush aromas of dark berries, violet, kelp and sea spray. The palate fuses a seamless, compact density with an alluring, buoyant nature, a combination I find to be a signature of the site, regardless of producer. It concludes with a precise, floral finish that lingers with savory undertones and botanical flourishes. A beautiful expression of a singular site, this should see out its 10th birthday in style.
