Platt Vineyard Description

Platt Vineyard, is located on a Sonoma Coast ridge line just 6 miles from the Pacific—the same ridge line occupied by the Kistler family’s Occidental property and Bodega Thieriot vineyard (Littorai). Platt was named for Lewis Platt, the former Hewlett Packard CEO who bought the nearly 300-acre property in the early 2000s. He started planting vines in 2003, and today the site's 43 acre of vines are primarily planted to Pinot Noir (28 acres) with the rest Chardonnay. Platt Vineyard has an illustrious history as David Ramey [of Ramey] took all the Chardonnay right from the start. Ted Lemon [of Littorai] got the Pinot Noir and asked for certain clones to be planted. A couple more plantings went in in ‘07 and then Failla, Red Car, Sussman, Rivers-Marie and Radio-Coteau started taking fruit as well. In 2022, AXA Millésimes purchased Platt Vineyard. The existing grape customers kept their fruit for that season, but it's all staying in-house now, starting with the 2023 vintage.

Produced from the blocks that harness both power and freshness (and primarilly the parcels that went Littorai), this wine's chiseled structure and fruit density showcase why the Calera clone is such a perfect fit here and the predominant clone in the blend. The Estate Reserve translates the year and site with great transparency: deep and darkly colored while intensely concentrated and vibrant, this bottling captures the scence of Platt For the Reserve bottling, we select lots that are pure, focused and win the longest ageing potential.

Clones are: Calera, Pommard, 777 (Dijon), 115 (Dijon).

Tasting Note: Aromatics are dominated by dark, freshly picked berries accentuated by alluring notes of lavender and sage. Muscular and tightly coiled, a firm mineral driven reduction enhances the cool, sleek mouthfeel. Despite its serious nature and inherent tension, it remains juicy and accessible. There is an array of black and purple fruits, blood orange, licorice, pine needle, violets, black tea, and clove. It is dense and gains weight on the mid palate thanks to ripe skin tannins and hints of polished oak, exuding class and pedigree on the refined finish.

Vinous: 98 Points

The 2023 Pinot Noir Estate Reserve stains the palate with an exotic mélange of blood orange, pomegranate, spice, new leather and cedar. A Pinot of tremendous density and sheer power, the 2023 Platt will need to shed some of its baby fat. This is a quintessential wine from one of the very greatest sites in the United States.
