Pieve Santa Restituta Description
Pieve Santa Restituta is Gaja’s estate in Montalcino, purchased in 1994. It is the family’s first expansion outside the Barbaresco and Barolo areas since its establishment in 1859. Brunello is a combination of all the vineyards in Montalcino owned by the Gaja Family. The name of the winery derives from the ancient Pieve (church), situated in the middle of the estate, whose foundations date back to the 4th century AD. VINEYARDS Part of the grapes from Rennina and Sugarille vineyards are blended with those from Torrenieri, in the northeastern area of Montalcino. While the soil in Rennina and Sugarille is clay-calcareous with high amounts of Galestro, the ground in Torrenieri is a mixture of clay, tuff and sand. First vintage of the estate was 2005.
Tasting Note: A slightly more concentrated ruby-red color than the classic Pieve Santa Restituta Brunello. Herbaceous Mediterranean notes of rosemary, thyme, and balsamic are more evident and persistent with hints of resin and spice. The palate shows complex tannins that are still reactive but well-made with savory qualities and fresh, balanced acidity making for a fresh and drinkable wine.
Vinous: 94 Points
Delicate and understated in the glass, the 2018 Brunello di Montalcino Renning whisps up with a pleasantly earthy mix of dried strawberries, roses and clove nuances. This coasts silky textural fruits across a core of brisk acidity and saline-minerals in an untethered Brunello of pure elegance. It finishes with ample tannins, but also remarkably fresh, leaving notes of red plum, mocha and tobacco to linger. This harmonious vintage of Renning should evolve beautifully in collectors' cellars
Wine Advocate: 94 Points
Pieve Santa Restituta made the hard decision to skip production in the hot and dry 2017 vintage, and thus returns to the market with its 2018 Brunello di Montalcino Rennina. Made with a blend of fruit from three vineyard sites with very different soil profiles, the Rennina maintains its distinct personality with elegant aromas of red fruit, forest berry, cassis, balsam herb and toasted almond. This vintage shows a hint of baked clay or black olive that underlines the warm vintage conditions. The wine is generous in terms of mouthfeel, with a nice fullness that remains graceful at the same time.
