Pierre Gaillard Description

Pierre Gaillard studied Viticulture and Enology in Beaune, and obtained a Graduate Diploma in Winemaking from Montpellier.  He bought his first parcel of land in 1981 which was called Clos de Cuminailles, located in Malleval.  It was there in the upper part of the medieval town of Malleval that Gaillard established his business.  In 2002, he created the estate of Madeloc in Banyuls-sur-Mer, followed by the estate of Cottebrune in Faugères in 2007.  Today, Gaillard manages a total of 77 hectares.

The vineyard is located in the northern part of the Rhone Valley, ranging from Cote-Rotie down through to Cornas in the South. Planted on steep slopes, the vines are located on the last foothills of the Massif Central.

The parcel of Côte Rozier is located in an amphitheater facing south, with many dried stone walls that retain the warmth of the sun.  This special situation translates to a particularly hot micro-climate.

Vinous: 92 Points

Ripe black cherry, black plum, cedar, bourbon vanilla and a touch of cedar present the 2022 Côte-Rôtie Rose Pourpre, a medium- to full-bodied red that's sexy and refreshing. Showing more concentration and overall ambition when set against the traditional Côte-Rôtie from the same vintage, the 2022 Rose Pourpre shows remarkably well, closing with an elegant finale.

Wine Advocate: 92 Points

Crafted entirely from Syrah planted on gneiss soils in the lieu-dit Cote Rozier, the 2022 Cote Rotie Rose Pourpre reveals aromas of spices, mulberries, black olives, dark berries and licorice. Medium to full-bodied, dense and deep, it has a gently assertive tannic frame, good depth at the core and a long, spicy, toasty finish. Matured for 18 months in barrels, this is a rather tense, firm wine that needs some time (4-8 years) in the cellar to chill out.
