Niepoort Description
Niepoort is one of the great Port houses and is now in its sixth generation of tradition and innovation. Fifth-generation owner Dirk Niepoort has paved the way for the production of dry wine in Port, and has been instrumental in elevating its status. Always interested in pushing the boundaries of what the Port wine industry looks like, Dirk, now joined by his son, Daniel, has acquired access to fruit throughout Portugal. Sustainable and organic work in the vineyard and cellar is always prioritized. Working with properties from the north to the south, Niepoort can be counted on to provide fortified and table wines that celebrate all that Portugal has to offer.
Vines come from low-yielding vineyards in the Cima Corgo region: Vinha da Pisca, Vale do Pinhão and Ferrão, with a vine age in excess of 60 years.
Wine Advocate: 95 Points
The NV 30 Year Old Tawny Port was bottled in 2023. They sell very small volumes of this wine so that they can keep up with it, as they are making a little bit more Port to keep and age for these blends and maybe aged colheitas (and Garrafeira!). It's moving in the direction of a liqueur or a brandy; the evaporation makes the wine concentrated, and the aromas are clearly more in the nut and varnish category. It's dense and impressive, pungent and powerful, with a round palate and a soft texture. They never made a 40 year old (or even less, the new 50 year old category), because it's not their style. But I have to admit that this 30 year old is very nice. This should last forever.
