Monteraponi Description

Monteraponi is more than just a winery, it’s an ancient medieval village just outside of the heart of Radda, built around three towers dating back to the 10th century. The entire property extends over an area of two hundred hectares set in a natural amphitheater, which is exposed to the south and sheltered from the north winds. Of those two hundred hectares only twelve are planted to vineyards. Another eight hectares are olive trees and the remaining land is covered with towering, ancient oak and chestnut trees. If that sounds like paradise, it’s because it is.

2010 was the first vintage produced of Trebbiano. Michele wanted to try to make a white wine in a place only known for reds. His Trebbiano vines are now over 50 years old. Once fermentation starts he presses and put everything into Burgundy barrels. 50% of the barrels were new Francois Freres Burgundy barrels toasted by steam (not fire) and 50% were second use barrels. Batonnage was done to introduce a textural element. This wine has a strong following among its fans (i.e., those who can get their hands on it!)

Vinous: 94 Points

The 2021 Trebbiano is one of the most distinctive whites in Tuscany. But it is a white only in color. The density, power and structure are much more like those of a red wine. Lemon confit, chamomile and dried flowers all frame this extremely delicious Trebbiano. The 2021 spent five days on the skins and then eight months in 100% new oak with no malolactic fermentation. Lees stirring builds notable texture in this striking Trebbiano.

Wine Advocate: 94+ Points

This is one of the icon whites from Tuscany that pays tribute to the "vitae dimenticae," or the forgotten grapes of the region. The organic Monteraponi 2021 Trebbiano features a local grape that has the natural fiber and texture for long cellar aging. Trebbiano also offers a pretty aromatic evolution as the wine spends more time in the cellar, putting on more weight and substance as it ages. This balanced vintage is well-poised for the long term, and at this young stage, it offers a creamy sensation of orchard fruit, apricot and exotic hints of cumin or saffron. Trebbiano comes from the Campitello and Baron'Ugo vineyards as well as a new terraced plot of vines.
