Maison Frédéric Magnien Description

Frédéric Magnien is a fifth-generation winemaker from Morey-SaintDenis. Learning the craft first from his father, Michel Magnien (of Domaine Michel Magnien), Fred also traveled to hone his talents in other fine wine regions before returning home and starting his own négociant domaine in his native village. Magnien differentiates himself from other négociants in that he works closely with partner growers throughout the growing season, selecting only older-vine parcels cared for to his exacting standards. His own teams pick the grapes at harvest, a further qualitative step. The vineyards Magnien works with are certified organic.

‘Croix Violette’ is a small, southeast-facing plot surrounded by a fragmented stone wall, neighboring an active cloister (the Violet Cross) in the village of Brochon, next to Gevrey-Chambertin. A third of the vineyard is planted to vines some 90 years old; average vine age, 50 years.

Tasting Notes: Aromas of violets, crushed stones, black raspberries. Mineral, suave; flavors of red berries, ripe red plums.

Wine Pairing: Grilled pork sausages; hard French cheeses

Burghound: 87-89 Points

Here there is no reductive funk and the ripe aromas are really quite pretty with their array of violet, plum, warm earth and discreet spice wisps. The sleek, delicious and attractively vibrant middle weight flavors terminate in a lightly austere and sneaky long finish that is better balanced.
