Geheimrat J. Wegeler Description

Weingüter Wegeler is a family-run business founded in 1882. The fourth generation of the Wegeler family continues the long tradtion, supported by Ralf Frenzel as speaker of the owner families. All operations are run by managing director Richard Grosche. Weingüter Wegeler has two winery sites on the Rhine and Mosel rivers, all of which focus on Riesling. In 2007, the addition of the 5-hectare Krone estate at Assmannshausen contributed a small but fine share of Pinot Noir to the line-up.

"J" is a blend of up to 15 different Erste Gewächs vineyards from the middle and lower Rheingau are combined in a vintage cuvée from the privy councilor "J". According to the principle of the first wines of Bordeaux, the first privy councilor "J" was vinified with the 1983 vintage. The internal quality requirements for this wine are still above the standard for first growths. "J" is only vinified in good to excellent years. In rather weak vintages, such as 1984, 1987 and 1991, no privy councilor "J" wine was made.

Tasting Note: Fine, multi-layered, clear. Lemon zest, sweet spice and a hint of exoticism on the nose. The wine is firm, powerful and has enormous pressure. Harmonious finish, with a delicate texture and impressive length.

Wine Pairing: Scottish salmon or trout in beurre blanc. Serve with dashi, chive oil, blue radish and smoked trout caviar.

The white-golden color of the 2012 Riesling trocken Geheimrat J reveals a spotlessly clean grape harvest, as does the clear, bright, elegant and concentrated nose of white-fleshed stone fruits. On the palate, this is a delicate and finessed as well as juicy but spicy and grippy Rheingau Riesling with plenty of extract and good length. This 2012 comes from a perfect bottle and will become a great Rheingau Riesling with further bottle age!

Vinous: 91 Points

Peach pit, rose hip and laurel on the nose, lifted by a hint of lemon zest. Crisp, clean, dense nectarine fruit shows a juicy texture and a refreshingly salty minerality. Good depth and weight here, and refined on the finish. One of the suaver dry rieslings from the Rheingau in the vintage.
