Evening Land Vineyards Description

The history of Evening Land Vineyards is built upon stewardship for a very special property in the Eola-Amity Hills AVA of the Willamette Valley in Oregon: the Seven Springs Vineyard. Originally planted in the early 1980's by Al MacDonald (a pioneering figure in the Oregon wine industry), it was purchased in 2007 by movie producer and wine aficionado Mark Tarlov. Tarlov's idea was to unite the historic Seven Springs Vineyard with its neighboring plot, from which it had been seperated because of a family dispute. With the help of legendary Burgundy vigneron Dominique Lafon and winemaker Isabelle Meunier, the Evening Land Vineyards team has elevated the perception of the American terroir in general and the Oregon wine region in particular by shifting from star variety Cabernet Sauvignon to Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Gamay.

The Seven Spring Vineyard expands over a 70 acres, planted mostly with Pinot Noir, followed by Chardonnay and some Gamay Noir. The vines grow in iron rich and rocky volcanic soils, on a dramatic slope with eastern exposure. They enjoy cool Pacific winds, which flood the area during the day and mitigate hot summer afternoons. This results in a signature acidity in the wines of Evening Land Vineyards.

The wines of Evening Land Vineyards are Burgundian in style, while they showcase the unique New World terroir of Oregon's Willamette Valley.

This vintage of Summum Pinot Noir comes from our oldest own-rooted block of Pinot Noir at Seven Springs. Originally planted in 1982, these Pommard clones thrive in iron-rich, volcanic Jory soils. The 40-year-old dry-farmed vines are harvested, sorted and fastidiously cared for by hand alone.

Does Summum ever not light up the person pressing their nose to it, tossing aside whatever else may be happening to surrender to these aromas and take a sip that simply goes on and on? What an intoxicating wine, chockablock with ripe red fruits, sous bois and just the right dose of new French oak. Wherever you taste it, silk becomes the seat, capacious becomes the room, and the sheer thrill that wine can bring is the destination to which this Pinot Noir is the vehicle.

Wine Advocate: 95 Points

From vines planted in 1995 and 1996, the 2021 Pinot Noir Summum has pure, layered scents of cranberry, raspberry, juniper, shiitake mushrooms and flint. The medium-bodied palate offers concentrated layers of red fruit, herbs and earth. It has a fine, tea-like astringency, vibrant acidity and a long, floral finish.
