"Winemaker Valter Fissore explains that it gives a leaner body with greater tannins, requiring longer maturation. The 2019 emerges furtively yet hauntingly with rose, freesia and strawberry blossom. There are hints of brushwood and liquorice too. But really, it is the floral bouquet that takes hold, overflowing discreetly onto the pristine, raspberry saturated palate where long, smooth and silky tannins are intricately knit, giving well delineated borders. The definition of finesse." - Decanter Magazine

Elvio Cogno Description

The Cogno family has been making wine in the Langhe area of Piedmont for four generations. The values of history and traditions handed down by father Elvio are enhanced by the freshness and innovation introduced by his daughter Nadia and her husband Valter Fissore.

This Barolo is crafted with deep respect for tradition, drawing on our grandparents’ experience—from selecting the 100% Rosè Nebbiolo clone to low-yield “Vigna” cultivation, native yeasts, and aging in large barrels. Combined with the Langhe microclimate, these choices create a wine that honors its heritage and elevates the Barolo name. Its label, a chick drawn by Elena at age three for her parents Nadia and Valter, captures the wine’s emotional and artisanal spirit. Planted with a Nebbiolo clone called Rosé, a grape that gives its wines a brilliant garnet color and intense floral aromas. Vigna Elena is about one hectare inside the Ravera cru, and its soil is calcareousclay with southeast exposure, at 380 m above sea level.

Tasting Note: Barolo Ravera Riserva Vigna Elena is always stratified, complex and extremely refined, especially in this vintage. It immediately refers to sweet notes of red berry and citrus, accompanied by distinct floral aromas such as rose and lavender, sweet spices and balsamic hints. It is a wine that perfectly combines structure with the pleasantness of drinking; it has precise tannins, great freshness and a very long persistence.

Wine Spectator: 96 Points

Silky and stylish, this red evokes fading cherry, strawberry and rose aromas and flavors. Augmented by eucalyptus, wild rosemary, iron and tobacco elements yet overall stays elegant and solidly built. Shows terrific balance and length.

Wine Advocate: 96+ Points

This wine represents the most important selection of fruit executed at this estate within a small one-hectare parcel. The top-shelf Elvio Cogno 2019 Barolo Riserva Ravera Vigna Elena is super precise and sharp with high density. The wine has a hard note that is transmitted across dark fruit, purple berries and exotic spice. That sharpness continues to the palate where you taste mineral nuances and crushed stone. It ages in oak for 36 months. I would give the Riserva more time to flesh out.

Production is 5,500 bottles.
