Domaine de la Vieille Julienne Description
Jean-Paul Daumen joined his family domaine in the 1992 vintage and has taken it to new heights. Working only 10 hectares of Châteauneuf-du-Pape and 5 hectares of Côtes-du-Rhône, he has farmed his land bio-dynamically since 2000. La Vieille Julienne is unique in that the vineyards lie on the northern edge of the appellation, and they are all north-facing - the only contiguous north-facing estate in the entire region. This allows a later, slower maturation of the grapes and ever-present elegance and balance. Jean-Paul walks his vineyards during harvest marking the plants that should be picked and waiting on others. He truly works his vineyard plant by plant, not parcel by parcel. Grapes are co-harvested and co-fermented.
Located on a mild terroir of slopes, between « Clavin » and « les Hauts-lieux », the grenache is perfectly at home there with this mosaic of safres's sands, pebbles and red clays, producing a perfect balance of power and finesse.
Wine Advocate: 95 Points
One of my favorite wines at this address, the 2022 Les Hauts-Lieux, derives from vines planted on a cooler, higher elevation on calcareous soils. These grapes, including more Mourvèdre (20%), are picked 15 days later than the other grapes. Evoking aromas of dark cherries, ground pepper, iris, tapenade and dark olive, it’s full-bodied, powerful and structured with velvety tannins and a dense, concentrated core of fruit enhanced by notes of chocolate and spices that segues into a long, mineral and superb finish. It’s poised to reach its 20th anniversary in outstanding condition.
Vinous: 94 Points
Mixing 70% Grenache with 20% Mourvèdre, 7% Cinsault, 7% Counoise and other permitted varieties, the 2022 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Hauts-Lieux is dashing. Sun-drenched raspberry, strawberry, red plum and licorice are front and center. Leafy shadings add gentle freshness. Full-bodied and concentrated, the 2022 is firmly framed by ripe tannins that provide solid structure. It will take at least four more years before to unleash its full potential.
