Domaine de la Folie Description

Chaigne is one of the domaine’s two flagships. Its eight acres of vines were planted in 1971 and grow to the side of its sibling Clos Saint Jacques but higher up the slope. Consequently, its wine is racier and finer, and these days especially transparent with its minerality. Like the Saint Jacques, this is now raised entirely in barrel, of which 10-15% is new while the remainder of the barrels are one to five years old.

Soil structure of the property is much closer to Cote de Beaune than Cote Chalonaise. The vineyards are on same vein of Limestone as you find in Puigny-Montrachet which is about 3mi away. The Domaine sits at the far northern portion of the appellation of Rully and is closer to Bouzeron than the rest of Rully. All of the white wine vineyards are Monopoles except for one wine (Aligote which is all Dore clone). Some of the vines in the Rully Crus are Pied Franc (self rooted!). The property has been in the same family's hands for over 300yrs!

On a recent trip to Burgundy (April 2023), I fell in love with the wines here and had to share them with our clients. This is really something special. (Antonio, Burgundy Buyer)

Wine Advocate: 90 Points

The 2020 Rully 1er Cru Clos du Chaigne Blanc exhibits attractive aromas of pear, sweet citrus oil and freshly baked bread, followed by a medium to full-bodied, ample and satiny palate, with a fleshy core of fruit, lively acids and a nicely defined finish. It's a charming, elegantly textural wine that saw some 30% maturation in tank, with the rest in used barrels.

Vinous: 89-91 Points

The 2020 Rully Clos de Chaigne ler Cru Blanc, the monopole of the domaine, is matured 90% in barrel (20% new with low toasting) and the rest in vat. It has a zesty, quite leesy lemon thyme bouquet. The palate is well balanced with fine acidity and pretty lemon zest and orange pith, all leading to a lively finish. I appreciate the completeness of this Rully, and it should bottle. age well in bottle.

Prices are bargains considering the rest of Burgundy, so don't overlook this grower for something with a trendier label.
