Domaine Thierry & Pascal Matrot Description

Joseph Matrot (1881-1963), the grandson of owners of a family wine estate in Puligny-Montrachet and Blagny, lived with his wife, Marguerite Amoignon, and their three children at Château d’Evelle. Marguerite also owned a beautiful wine estate in Meursault. In 1914, they took up residence in Marguerite’s family home, which is today the seat of Domaine Matrot, and decided to develop and extend the estate. Over the course of generations, Domaine Matrot continued to expand with the addition of new vineyard holdings, and in 2000 began harvesting the vineyards organically. Today, sisters Adèle and Elsa Matrot are in charge of the management and winemaking of the Domaine, ensuring that the family-run domaine will be in good hands for many years to come. Observing careful cultivation and vinification techniques, Domaine Matrot wines offer purity of fruit and terroir-driven character.

The Monthélie is mostly from very old vines situated in Les Hauts Brins that have approximately 20% pinot beurot interspersed with the pinot vines

Vinous: 89-91 Points

The 2020 Monthélie Rouge has a lovely, fresh, quite floral bouquet with red cherry and strawberry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with svelte tannins, taut and fresh, gentle grip with a slightly chalky piquant finish. Plenty of energy here, a delightful Monthélie to enjoy over the next decade.

Burghound: 87-89 Points

Here too the wood treatment is admirably subtle on the slightly more elegant combination of fresh red and blue pinot fruit that evidences subtle spice and underbrush nuances. The sleek, vibrant and appealingly textured middle weight flavors that contrast with the dusty, chalky and slightly edgy finale. This should benefit from another few months in barrel and I suspect that the edginess will eventually round off.
