Domaine Robert Chevillon Description

The track record of the Chevillon wines in the cellar is one of the most remarkable aspects of this storied domaine.  We regularly have the good fortune to taste back through the past three decades of vintages of all the various premier crus and the wines always more than convincing—they are amongst Burgundy’s very best.  In fact, I have often been more disappointed with grand cru bottlings than I am with the top-tier Chevillon premier crus.  Indeed, Nuits-Saint-Georges does not officially have any grand cru vineyards, but we are convinced that Cailles, Vaucrains and Les Saint-Georges are firmly grand cru quality.  This decision is currently in the hands of the appellation authorities but it is almost better if the status quo doesn’t change–that way we are assured to get grand cru quality at a premier cru price!

Les Cailles is derived from the word cailloux, or pebbles, not the common assumption that it is derived from the modern meaning, “quails”

Wine Advocate: 93-95 Points

Deep and seamless, the 2020 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Cailles mingles aromas of cherry and berry fruit with hints of rose petals, orange rind, sweet spices and raw cocoa. Medium to full-bodied, suave and velvety, with terrific concentration, fine tannins and lively acids, it's the most elegant wine in the range.

Vinous: 91-93 Points

The 2020 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Cailles ler Cru offers more red fruit on the nose, again, just a little prune-like perhaps, a touch confit-like at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with a patina of new oak on the entry, moderate depth, quite smooth with some wood tannins on the finish that will need 5-6 years to be fully subsumed. Give this time.

Burghound: 90-93 Points

Moderate wood sets off spicy and very ripe aromas of various dark berries that are not quite as fresh though they are nicely layered. The exceptionally rich medium-bodied flavors possess fine intensity as well as good concentration, indeed the sappy dry extract buffers the equally firm and robust finale. The Chevillon Les Cailles is normally a wine of refinement and grace but the 2020 version is much more robust and powerful than usual.
