Domaine Philippe Jouan Description
Founded in 1962 by Henri Jouan, it is now managed by his son Philippe, representing the fourth generation of winemakers in the family. Domaine Henri Jouan, has been quietly great for many years going unnoticed until; boom! They start to take off and the success happens seemingly overnight. Henri was a classmate, contemporary, and friend of the great Jacky Truchot, and his winemaking style has always been very similar: 100% de-stemming, meticulous farming, gentle extractions, and an overall obsession with the craft. His son Philippe took over in 2004 and has changed almost nothing. Why ruin a good thing?
This careful attention to detail results in wines that are both powerful and elegant, balanced and (with age) full of layers and depth. So why are they unknown? The simple answer is they've never made enough wine to seek publicity or engage in any marketing. The internet has very little info and there are almost zero reviews or write-ups.
The estate covers about 3 hectares, spread over around ten parcels across the appellations Morey-Saint-Denis, Gevrey-Chambertin, Chambolle-Musigny, and the Grand Cru Clos Saint-Denis.
The domaine is known for its commitment to traditional practices, notably using a century-old wooden press and fermenting grapes in small batches. The wines are made with minimal intervention, neither fined nor filtered, and aged in oak barrels, sometimes with up to 40% new oak for certain cuvées like Clos Sorbé.
They farm just over 4 hectares, and much of that fruit goes to Drouhin, whom they've been selling to for 50 years. Precious few bottles get the Jouan label.
The wines are characterized by their purity, freshness, and pronounced fruity expression, faithfully reflecting the unique terroir of the Côte de Nuits. Due to limited production, the domaine’s wines are highly sought after
Tasting Note: A charming blend of three different plots of Chambolle. Accessible and fresh, delicate notes of red currant and rose petals.
