Coquerel Description
Coquerel Family Wine Estates is located just beyond the town of Calistoga at the north end of the Napa Valley. The heart and soul of our winery is our Walnut Wash estate vineyard, a gorgeous, oak-studded property that sits in the afternoon shadows of the Mayacamas Mountains. Since 2005, we have done extensive enhancement and replanting of the site to ensure world-class fruit from vintage to vintage. The combination of warm temperatures and deep, clay soils make this ideal terroir for Sauvignon Blanc, our flagship variety. It also produces exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Verdelho, Tempranillo and Petite Sirah. In 2015, we planted 4 acres of estate Cabernet Sauvignon on clay soil (clone 169 and 4 on rootstock 3309) and Cabernet Franc (clone 214 on riparia) with narrow high density 3x5 spacing
2022 was another dry vintage. Overall, the temperature was moderate until September. At the beginning of September, Napa Valley had a heat wave which really helped to ripen our fruit. A peak temperature of 108°F was recorded for the first time in Napa Valley. Harvest took place on the evening of September 13th
The fruit for our 2022 Cabernet Franc come from our estate Walnut Wash Vineyard in Calistoga. The grapes were de-stemmed, crushed, cold macerated for 48 hours and punched down throughout fermentation to extract as much flavor as possible. The wine was then pressed, barreled before malolactic fermentation and aged 22 months in French oak (25% new). Bottling took place at the beginning of August 2024.
Our 2022 Walnut Wash Estate Cabernet Franc has a nice bright red color. The nose is very aromatic and has expressive notes of violet and black cherries. The palate is medium bodied with soft tannin and a long finish of red cherry and delicate floral notes. It will pair perfectly with cassoulet, duck, and hearty vegetarian dishes such as brown butter sage Hen of the Woods mushrooms. While this wine drinks beautifully now it will continue to improve over the next decade.
