Château Cos-Labory Description
The name of the estate comes from its geographical location on the hill of Cos and the name of François Labory, who was the first owner until 1845.
In 2023, Michel Reybier and his family open a new chapter of the history of Château Cos Labory, classified a Fifth Growth in 1855, in Saint-Estèphe. With a focus on heritage conservation, this acquisition is a tribute to its founder, Louis Gaspard d’Estournel, who first acquired it in 1847.
Sitting upon the hill of Cos, the terroir of Cos Labory is situated on its plateau of deep gravel, with its clay and limestone base, benefits from the nearby Gironde estuary and the influence of the Atlantic Ocean temper extreme weather conditions.
Wine Advocate: 90 Points
The 2019 Cos Labory reveals inviting aromas of plums, blackcurrants and loamy soil, followed by a medium-bodied, supple and elegantly fleshy palate that's framed by fine, powdery tannins and succulent acids. Open and charming for a young Saint-Estèphe, it will drink well with minimal bottle age.
Vinous: 89+ Points
The 2019 Cos Labory has a crisp, slightly earthy but harmonious nose with blackberry and raspberry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with hard tannins on the entry, stern and a bit austere. Tough going in the context of the vintage, though it softens after 20 minutes and achieves much better balance plus greater freshness.
(89+ points)
I praised the 2019 Cos Labory as one of the best in recent years based on its barrel showing, and in bottle, it hasn't let me down. It's well defined and fresh, if not amazingly complex, and delivers some lovely black fruit mixed with graphite and mint aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, lightly spiced and quite cohesive, showing greater density on the finish compared to recent vintages. Bravo.
