Brendan’s 2019 Saumur Rouge is sourced from the southwest lieu-dit La Rippaille in the commune of Brézé, where the vines root in mostly sandy-clay soil. Based on 100% destemmed grapes and the must, with no extraction (no pump-overs) and left to ferment with indigenous yeasts and then aged for six months in stainless steel tanks, the 2019 opens with an intense, nicely reductive fruity and meaty bouquet of dark cherries and berries intertwined with iron, stony and vegetal or floral aromas on a perfectly seamless, refined and elegant nose. Silky as well as juicy on the palate, with intense and well-concentrated fruit, good acidity and ripe, well-integrated tannins, this is a mouth-filling and easy-drinking Saumur that is perfectly balanced and juicy and definitely an excellent all-rounder for many gastronomic opportunities.
