Bedrock Wine Co. Description
Bedrock Wine Co. was started in 2007 by Morgan Twain-Peterson. Working out of a small converted chicken coop in a friend’s backyard, Morgan focused on making personality-filled wines wrought from a small array of thoughtfully farmed vineyards. Over time the chicken coop and its outdoor fermenters and tiny basket press gave way to production at another friend’s winery and eventually to the “elegant” tin-sided warehouse that is now called home. In addition, after six years of working alone the winery welcomed Chris Cottrell as a partner-in-crime along with a small, dedicated staff of highly decent human beings.
The winery is first and foremost a mission-driven operation dedicated to preserving and rehabilitating old vineyards around California. These vineyards, planted by California’s viticultural pioneers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, are living pieces of history. Not only are they able to draw inspiration from those very pioneers, but they get to actually use the materials they planted, which have survived two world wars, Prohibition and a constantly changing marketplace. If something has been growing for over 100 years it not only deserves the respect of us humans, but it probably makes some darn good wine too.
We love California mountain Cabernet, and this is about as “mountain” as it gets: Montecillo Vineyard is old-vine Cabernet, dry-farmed and located at the tip-top of the Moon Mountain District AVA at 2000’ elevation. The mainstay of the legendary Kenwood Artist Series wines from the 80s and 90s, the vineyard lost the spotlight until the last decade when Turley, Arnot Roberts, Beta, Dumol, ourselves and most importantly, the new owner Stewart Cellars, started working with the fruit. With the added limelight has come vineyard improvements and the wine quality continues to reach new highs. Picked on October 11th at a very reasonable 24.2 brix, this is a banner vintage for this wine. Elegant but rich and filled with glass-filling aromatics, this is classic mountain Cabernet with the gorgeous, high-tone florals from the mild vintage.
Vinous: 94 Points
Just bottled, the 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon Montecillo Vineyard Old Vine is one of the most elegant wines I have ever tasted from this site. Orange peel, mint, chalk and white pepper are all beautifully lifted. The 2023 possesses a gorgeous, understated density. I imagine it will fill out more with time in the bottle.
Wine Advocate: 93 Points
The 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon Montecillo Vineyard comes from dry-farmed vines planted at 2,000 feet above sea level in the 1960s. Harvested on October 11, it has alluring aromas of cassis, green bell pepper, dark chocolate, pencil shavings and spicy undertones. The full-bodied palate is pleasantly firm and mineral-driven at this early stage. It’s balanced by bright acidity and has a long, graphite-laced finish. It will be long lived in the cellar.
