Abadía Retuerta Description
This wine of great character has been made entirely from Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. After 30 years, this variety shows an almost perfect adaptation to the unique location of Pago Valdebellón, with its calcareous soil that benefits from a particular microclimate in the highest part of the estate.
The result is a wine of intense, dark color that exudes a fresh and delicate aroma of sweet spices, exotic fruits, and minerals. Its persistent bouquet of currant and undergrowth exudes character. Overall, it is a complex and generous wine that has become known and recognized as the best Cabernet Sauvignon in Spain.
Tasting Note: A unique and nuanced wine that reveals its complexity from the very first sip. Ripe black fruit is expressed with intensity, true to the essence of its variety. On the palate, it is ample and vibrant, with an explosion of fruit that envelops the palate and a long, lingering finish.
Vinous: 94 Points
The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Pago de Valdebellón is from Sardón del Duero and was aged for a year in new French oak barrels. A dark garnet-red in the glass. The nose offers mint, menthol, roasted red bell pepper, sour cherry, tobacco and ash aromas. The palate is dry and juicy, with finely-grained tannins and balanced acidity before the long-lasting, flavorful finish, which delivers distinctive roasted pepper notes.
Wine Advocate: 93 Points
The 2019 Pago Valdebellón, their single-vineyard pure Cabernet Sauvignon comes from their higher-altitude plot and the vines have smaller leaves and thicker skins to resist the intensity of the sun there. 2019 was a dry year with low yields and small grapes. The uncrushed grapes fermented with 15 days of maceration, and the wine matured in French oak barrels, new for the first year and then was transferred to used barrels for a further six months. It's young, modern and serious, very concentrated and wide, full-bodied and with rounder tannins.
