Thorne and Daughters Description

Thorne and Daughters Wines was started in 2012 by John and Tasha Seccombe to produce authentic wines in the beautiful Western Cape where we have made our home. It has been a long journey that has taken us around the world and brought us back here to where we first met. We love the Cape, and we want to taste this air and this sunshine in our wines.

To produce our wines we’ve drawn on the great history of wine growing here in South Africa, putting together old vineyard parcels with new grape varieties, and making wines with old school simplicity and a modern ‘edge’. Our approach to wine making is simple, honest and gentle, and we are looking to make wines that tell a story of the Cape of Good Hope.

Rocking Horse is our cornerstone wine and takes its name from a wooden rocking horse that we made for our daughters out of old oak barrel staves. This is our signature wine and it is where all our work comes together to showcase our vision for a Cape White blend.

The wine is composed from a number of carefully selected vineyard sites in the Western Cape. The 2023 vintage is one of layers and tension, with aromas of flint, peach and jasmine. The palate follows with gentle tropical notes, vanilla and yuzu on a tightly coiled finish.

Roussanne – 30% Stellenbosch / Paardeberg – 14 years old - decomposed granite / clay
Chenin blanc – 28% Paardeberg 44 years old - decomposed granite and Malmesbury 40 years old iron-rich soils
Chardonnay – 20% Ceres Plateau 10 years old – sandstone over clay
Semillon blanc – 15% Swartland – 60 and 14 years old - alluvial soils
Clairette blanche – 7%Worcester 45 years old - alluvial soils

Vinous: 94 Points

The 2023 White Blend Rocking Horse Cape comes from several different parcels, each dedicated to a different variety, this year driven by 30% Roussanne and 28% Chenin Blanc. This is very nuanced on the nose, taking more time to unfold compared to the Cat's Cradle Chenin. Yellow fruit, Riesling-like petrol scents and crushed chalky notes emerge with time. The palate is very well balanced with a crisp line of acidity and superb weight. John Seccombe managed to combine these grape varieties without losing one iota of focus-tensile right to the finish. A level up from the 2022, this comes highly recommended.
