Michele Satta Description
In 1974, Michele Satta arrived in Bolgheri, a coastal town in Tuscany, to learn all that he could about the intricacies of growing grapes and making wine. In 1982, he started his own winery, which was one of the first in Bolgheri, just two years before the DOC was established. He was a pioneer in cultivating Syrah, Teroldego, and Viognier to the region as well as vinifying Sangiovese as single varietal wines. Michele is a well-known, respected and regarded as the local expert in the terroir of Bolgheri. Along with running his estate, Michele had consulted for renowned properties such as Ornellaia, where he planted many of their vineyards including Masseto.
In ‘91 Michele planted the first vineyard with Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese and Syrah, with the aim of indulging both the established great expression of Bordeaux grape varieties in Bolgheri, both the all-Tuscan elegance of Sangiovese and the all-Mediterranean complexity of Syrah. It is the first wine in the territory to use the Bolgheri Rosso designation. From 2012 it becomes Bolgheri Rosso Superiore, as the vines have now reached sufficient age to express all their complexity. As of the 2019 vintage, Syrah is no longer part of the blend.
This is the estate's expression of all the young vineyards with the freshest and lightest production. A wine that is a representation of how Bolgheri knows how to produce wines of great drinkability and satisfying complexity. The maturations are never excessive as are the extractions. Right from the vineyard management, the air is to produce a wine that is representative of Bolgheri's joy.

Now showing the name Toscana on the front label (signaling updates to appellation law), the Michele Satta 2022 Bolgheri Rosso is an updated blend of 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Sangiovese, 30% Merlot and 10% Syrah (aged in concrete and barrique for 12 months). This is fresh and fruit-forward red with an easy-drinking style. Cherry flavors are especially prominent in this hot-vintage wine, and its elegant high notes remain intact.

The 2022 Bolgheri Rosso is a gorgeous entry-level offering from Satta. Crushed flowers, sweet red/purplish fruit and a kick of spice are nicely pushed forward in this exuberant, racy red. A burst of red-toned fruit punctuates the lively finish.
