Domaine Robert Chevillon Description
The stunning collection of premier cru and old-vine vineyards held by the two Chevillon brothers would make any Pinot Noir grower jealous. Their innate ability to carefully tend the vines and master the difficult Burgundian conditions provides ripe, healthy clusters of grapes year after year. Taste through the barrels of Chevillon post-harvest and it doesn't matter what happened the year before, almost as if by miracle, the wines show class and character and each terroir has its distinct idiosyncrasies. It is le vrai Pinot chez Chevillon.
Brothers Bertrand and Denis Chevillon are the fifth generation managers of this property in Nuits- Saint-Georges, which means they work the vines and make the wines. Their father Robert, for whom the domaine is named, is still active as well. Both brothers bring passion, experience, a tireless work ethic, and intensity to their work at the domaine. Tasting through their palate of Nuits- Saint-Georges is a venerable tour of the appellation. Their Passetoutgrain, a blend of Pinot and Gamay, is a worthy introduction and their rare (two barrels made) Nuits-Saint-Georges Blanc made from the “Pinot Gouges” is an exotic treasure that ages just as long as the domaine’s fabled reds. And their Bourgogne Aligoté, Bourgogne Chardonnay and Bourgogne Rouge are grown and vinified with the same care as their premier crus. It shows.
Name originates from one of the original uses of the land, a place where stones could be found, a kind of quarry
From a .60 ha parcel of 40+ year old vines
Wine Advocate: 92-94 Points
The 2018 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Perrières was showing especially well, mingling aromas of cassis and dark chocolate with savory nuances of loamy soil and grilled squab in an incipiently complex bouquet. Medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, it's lively and precise, with terrific tension despite the richness and power of the vintage.
Vinous: 91-93 Points
The 2018 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Perrières ler Cru has a riper and showier bouquet compared to the Roncières, featuring dark berry fruit, crushed violets and iris flowers, hints of blood orange and dark chocolate emerging with time in the glass. The medium-bodied palate offers supple tannins, very good depth and a more tertiary element compared to Chevillon's other 2018s. Perhaps here the oak will need more time to be subsumed, but there is certainly very good depth on the finish. Give it three to five years in bottle
Burghound: 91-93 Points
This is aromatically quite similar to the Bousselots but where the kirsch character is even more prominent. There is even better volume and richness to the larger-scaled and intense mineral-driven flavors that exude an almost pungent salinity on the very firmly structured and youthfully austere finale. This is excellent but I wouldn't suggest buying it without an express intent to cellar it for at least the mid-term as it will require 15+ years to realize its full potential.
