Château Carlmagnus Description
Arnaud Roux-Oulié, owner of the Carlmagnus, Francs-Magnus castles and also of the Montcanon, Lagüe and Vincent Castles, has multiple passions, fencing, wine and painting. Unable to part with any of them, this double champion of France ended up making wine the central theme of his art. His paintings flourish in his home, but also in his cellars, which allows Château Carlmagnus to be, for two reasons, a figurehead in Fronsac.
In 1663, the Duke of Richelieu decided to acquire the lands of the Duchy of Fronsac for his family. It is therefore on the ruins of the old fortress that his grand-nephew, Marshal Arnaud du Plessis, Ducde Richelieu, had a "madness" built, the scene of gallant festivals whose echo spread to the court of Louis XIV.
From then on, the notoriety of Fronsac wines will continue to spread and the other Libournais wines predominate, including Saint-Emilion and Pomerol. In the 18th century, the qualitative revolution of Libournais wines will take its roots here and the rise of world maritime trade will largely contribute to establishing the Fronsac vineyard among the noblest of the Bordeaux vineyards.
Tasting Note: A deep purple color, silky tannins, this bottle can give you immediate pleasure or be left to age for several years.
Wine Advocate: 93 Points
The 2020 Carlmagnus has a medium to deep garnet-purple color and vivacious scents of redcurrant jelly, ripe black plums and boysenberries, plus hints of iron ore, black truffles, lavender and cracked black pepper. The medium to full-bodied palate fills the mouth with intense red and black fruit layers, supported by ripe, rounded tannins and oodles of freshness, finishing long and earthy.
Vinous: 88 Points
The 2020 Carlmagnus has a lively, quite briny bouquet that is well-defined and focused. The palate is taut and fresh with a spicy opening, fleshy on the mid-palate with orange rind and allspice mixed with licorice on the finish. Fine.
