Borgo del Tiglio Description
“Nicola Manferrari is one of Friuli’s original trailblazers. Along with Mario Schiopetto, Josko Gravner and Silvio Jermann, Manferrari was just one of a handful of producers in the 1980s who had the vision and courage to follow his convictions. Winemakers like Enzo Pontoni and Edi Kante, each in their own way, followed that same spirit. Still, Borgo del Tiglio remains vastly overlooked considering the quality of what goes into the bottle. So much of what is made in Friuli today is essentially commercial, large-production wine with little personality. In that context, Borgo del Tiglio is a towering presence of true excellence and a shining beacon of what is possible in one of Italy’s greatest but often most underachieving appellations.”
— ANTONIO GALLONI, VINOUS.COM
The Collio is made from Tocai (Friulano), Sauvignon, and Riesling Renano. The blend was born in 1989, following a series of experimental blends when trying to create the first vintage of Studio di Bianco. The Collio has become a collection of the various varieties Nicola works with and a snapshot of a particular vintage. The three varieties are particularly suitable to be vinifed together as they are complementary in many respects: the high acid quality of the Sauvignon and the Riesling balances the power and body of Tocai.
Wine Advocate: 93 Points
This is a fantastic value proposition from one of the best white wine estates in Italy. The Borgo del Tiglio 2023 Collio Bianco is a blend of 50% Friulano, 30% Sauvignon Blanc and 20% Riesling Renano that spends nine months in barrique, with fruit drawn from vineyards in Brazzano and Ruttars in the heart of the Collio hills. The wine’s delivery is smooth and silky, showing clean stone fruit, white peach and nectarine along with a few well-placed savory highlights, reflecting the estate’s patient approach to élevage and balance.
