Finca la Estacada, of La Mancha, contemplated which of their many varietals would comprise the first release of their flagship 'Family Reserve' wine. The wine will be comprised of the best varietal from each vintage. For the 2003 vintage Syrah was the best varietal, even though it is only about 3% of their vineyard plantings.

Finca La Estacada's vines are located on slightly higher ground than its neighbors, allowing for higher levels of acidity and preservation of fruit than that found in other wines from this otherwise scorching region. This higher altitude allowed the grapes on the Syrah vines hang longer and concentrate the sugars. Longer than average skin contact, combined with smaller berries resulted in this blockbuster!

Deep purple and nearly opaque, this wine offers a delicate smoky aroma with hints of black olives and violets. It is opulent, juicy, and mouth filling, with large but soft tannins. Quite distinct from Syrahs offered by France or Australia. Compare it to the best from California! This is one of the best Syrahs we have ever tried. A very limited wine. $34.99
